The Carr Family and the Beaches
This exhibit developed in collaboration with the Maryland State Archives and supported by grant funding from the Maryland 250 Commission tells the story of the Carr Family. The exhibition illustrates a timeline with archival material including land records, historic maps, and photographs. The timeline paints the story of how Fred and Mary Wells Carr acquired 150 acres along the Chesapeake Bay that they opened to the community for recreation and leisure. It profiles the Carr sisters as Black Women Developers and Entrepreneurs. The exhibit also tells the story of how new owners obtained the Carr family land holdings for the development of the Waste Water Treatment Plant and the Chesapeake Harbor Condominium Community. The story of the Carr family beach resorts in the context of declining demand for segregated recreation, leisure, and entertainment venues following the Civil Rights movement is also explored.
